In 2000, the Association de Formation et d’Appui au Development (AFAD- Association for the Education and Support for Development) joined the Earth Charter Initiative. During the same year the association incorporated the Earth Charter into a number of already existing activities and broadly disseminated it throughout the country. They also presented the document to the President of the Republic of Mali as well as to other important public actors. President Amadou Toumani Touré is a member of the Earth Charter Commission.
In 2012 and 2013, AFAD worked with 5 Municipalities of Koulikoro Region and included the Earth Charter in the projects related to governance, education, climate change, and health. All these municipalities endorsed the Earth Charter.
