Thesis on Gender, Sustainable Development and the Earth Charter

“Gender, Sustainable Development and the Earth Charter: Research, Analysis and Recommendations” is the title of the thesis of Mayme Lefurgey, student of the Master Program in Gender and Peacebuilding of the UN Mandated University for Peace, in Costa Rica.

One of the most important objectives of this research was to assess how gender is presently represented at Earth Charter Initiative through analyzing the organization’s current approach to gender issues, the interconnectedness of gender rights and sustainable development internationally, and to determine how this is applicable to ECI.

The researcher used an analysis of secondary data, a literature review, and undertook a survey with a sample of people from all regions of the world involved in the Earth Charter Initiative (ECI Secretariat Staff and Council members, Affiliates, Partners, Advisors, and Youth members). As a result, this thesis offered a number of recommendations for gender mainstreaming activities that ECI can implement in the coming future.
