New ECI offices and The Earth Charter Center for Education for Sustainable Development

After months of construction, the new EC Center and ECI Secretariat offices are ready and functional.

The new building, which has an area of 552.85 square meters, was built following the LEED guidance for sustainable construction and will be applying for LEED certification. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the United States Green Building Council standard for sustainable and environmental design.

The Center’s mission is to support the Earth Charter Initiative mission “to promote the transition to sustainable ways of living and a global society founded on a shared ethical framework that includes respect and care for the community of life, ecological integrity, universal human rights, respect for diversity, economic justice, democracy and a culture of peace”, with a special focus on educational needs.

The Center will endeavor to promote understanding of the sustainability vision as articulated in the Earth Charter and the use of the Earth Charter as an ethical guide and the implementation of its principles by civil society, business, and government. The Center will also serve to encourage and support the educational use of the Earth Charter in schools, universities, religious communities, local communities, and many other settings.

The Center will design and deliver transformative learning courses, workshops and materials on ethics and sustainability for various groups. It will also focus work in the research field of education for sustainability and ethics by developing, in coordination with a network of organizations, white-papers, books, essays, and other publications.
