Leonardo Boff: Rescue Your Capacity to Feel

On Tuesday, the 13th of March, the well-known Brazilian theologian and Earth Charter Commissioner, Leonardo Boff, offered an inspiring talk at the University for Peace entitled, “Is peace possible in a world of chaos?” He reflected on the ethical crisis we are experiencing and the lack of sensitivity demonstrated by modern society. He also addressed the urgent need to understand the notions of “Community of Life” and “Shared Responsibility” and made other inspiring reflections about the Earth Charter. The event, co-organized by UPEACE and the Earth Charter Center for Education for Sustainable Development, was recorded and will be available soon on the Earth Charter website. Representatives from the diplomatic community in Costa Rica and special invitees including Costa Rican politicians, UPEACE staff, students, and professors were in attendance.

Later in the afternoon, Boff spoke at an event on “Ethics and Sustainability” at Hotel Corobici. His lecture, which was co-organized by the AVINA Foundation and the Earth Charter Center for Education for Sustainable Development, brought together representatives from key organizations in government, private sector and civil society. He motivated the attendees “to rescue [their] capacity to feel and care about the Others and our Home, the Earth.”

He continued his speaking engagements this week at the National University of Costa Rica (UNA), giving a lecture on “Global Warming and Ethics” in an event co-organized by UNA and the Earth Charter Center for Education for Sustainable Development.

A world-renowned philosopher, theologian and educator, Boff actively promotes the Earth Charter in his work with local communities, academics and presentations.
