The book ‘Moments that Speak:Stories and Images of Connection’, edited by Lisa Marika Jokivirta, Anna Duhon & Shannon Walsh, is an Earth Charter Youth project, supported by NCDO. It is a collection of personal stories and images of transformative connection gathered from around the world through a youth-led initiative inspired by the Earth Charter.
This was a youth-led project, initiated and carried out by a group of 12 Earth Charter Youth representing five continents and together forming the Earth Charter Youth Leadership Team. The initial global call for submissions was made in 2007 to gather people’s stories and images on the theme of our global oneness and connectedness. The response was overwhelming! Over 800 submissions were received from people all around the world, aged 14 to 89.
The book is dedicated to Wangari Maathai and it features contributions by Wangari Maathai, David Suzuki, Mary Evelyn Tucker, and Leonardo Boff, as well as many other moving stories and images of connection contributed by people all over the world. The beautiful and diverse photos and stories gathered in this unique compilation embody compassion, celebrate wonder, and are testaments of hope.
It was officially launched by Rabbi Awraham Soetendorp during the Earth Charter event on June 19th, in the framework of the Rio+20 Summit. It was also presented and discussed during the Earth Charter Youth event on June 18th, at the People’s Summit.
In order to promote the content and message of the book, NCDO and the Earth Charter Partner Thumbs Up Africa planned a special action (which will continue until August 2012). Buying one book for US$10, means that you will receive a copy, while another copy reaches someone in Africa. Thumbs Up Africa will provide NCDO with these addresses in the framework of their ‘interactive journey’ from Groningen to Cape Town.
If you would like to order this book, please send an email with your contact details and your personal message for your counterpart in Africa to [email protected].
