Training for UNESCO Associated Schools in Costa Rica

The Earth Charter Center for Education for Sustainable Development, in Costa Rica, is offering an intensive, two-day course on education, sustainability, and values for teachers of the UNESCO Associated Schools Network in Costa Rica.

The first course was held from 6 to 7 August, with teachers from the provinces of Heredia and Limón. The second course was held on 13 and 14 August, with teachers from the capital, San José. The last course will take place on September 3 and 4, and teachers will be coming from the provinces of Alajuela, Cartago, and Guanacaste.

The course, named “Educating for sustainability with the Earth Charter”, is part of the commitment of the UNESCO Chair of ESD that the Earth Charter Center for ESD coordinates. The overall objective is to provide a space for teachers to deepen and strengthen their knowledge about sustainability, as well as their capacity to integrate the inherent values of sustainability into the teaching process and in the educational institution.

The course seeks to implement the principles of transformative pedagogy, where the student is the center of the educational process, and also looks for a high level of participation and use of different methodologies for different learning styles.

At the end of the course, participating teachers commit to complete a project in their class or school, where they put into practice what they learned in the course.
