Celebrating Earth Day in Guatemala

Earth Charter International was invited to participate in the celebration of Mother Earth Day organized by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of the Government of Guatemala.

The celebration took place on Tuesday, April 20, and had 120 participants, mostly officials from both Ministries, who participate in the Inter-Institutional Coordination Group for Sustainable Development Environmental Education. Officials and education technical advisors of the following institutions also participated:
National Forest Institute (INAB)
National Council of Protected Areas (CONAP)
Municipality of Guatemala
Watershed Management Authority for Atitlan Lake (AMSCLAE)
Interamerican Foundation of Tropical Research (FIIT)
Animal Care Unit (UBA MAGA), and others

There were three presentations in this event:

  • Knowledge and appreciation of the Earth from the National Base Curriculum-CNB: Erick Ruedas, DIGECUR-MINEDUC
  • The Earth Charter as a reference for environmental education: Alicia Jiménez, CTI
  • Educational actions in favor of Mother Earth. Katherin Maholy Saravia Martínez, DIFOPAS – MARN

It was important to know that the Government of Guatemala included the Earth Charter as a reference in the National Policy of Environmental Education of Guatemala, Government Agreement Number 189-2017
