In commemoration of World Environment Day 2026, Eco Dialogue Network successfully organized a community beach clean-up exercise at Nungua Nshorna Beach on Saturday, 6 June 2026. The initiative brought together volunteers, youth groups, community members, and environmental advocates who shared a common commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and responsible waste management.

The clean-up exercise was organized to raise awareness about the growing challenges of marine pollution and the importance of maintaining clean coastal ecosystems. Participants worked tirelessly to remove plastic waste, discarded fishing materials, sachet water rubbers, bottles, and other forms of litter that had accumulated along the shoreline.

A notable feature of the event was the specially designed T-shirts worn by participants, which prominently displayed the logos of Eco Dialogue Network and Earth Charter International. The inclusion of the Earth Charter International logo highlighted the event’s alignment with the organisation’s global principles of environmental protection, social justice, sustainable development, and respect for all forms of life. The partnership of values represented by both organisations underscored the need for collective action in addressing environmental challenges.

During the exercise, Ms Dora Larweh, an Earth Charter young leader and the team lead for Eco Dialogue Network, emphasised that environmental stewardship is a shared responsibility that requires the active participation of individuals, communities, businesses, and government institutions. They noted that improper waste disposal continues to threaten marine biodiversity, public health, and the livelihoods of coastal communities.

The clean-up exercise also served as an educational platform where participants engaged in discussions on proper waste management practices, plastic pollution reduction, climate action, and sustainable living. Community members were encouraged to adopt responsible environmental behaviours, including waste segregation, recycling, and proper disposal of refuse.

This initiative contributes directly to the achievement of several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
