This dynamic forum, held in the city of Darien, Georgia, USA, was hosted by the state of Georgia Public Service Commission and featured 30 experts from the sustainability, energy, education, and environmental sectors. Topics included solar power, recycling, renewable natural gas, coastal management, values-based education and sustainable development and carbon-free nuclear energy. The day was launched with a celebration and planting of nine (9) live oak trees at the Darien Primary School. Following, a series of 48 presentations were delivered, nonstop, throughout the day at the Oaks on the River waterfront venue. The atmosphere was exciting as each speaker was interviewed regarding their personal and institutional commitment to sustainability and preservation of the planet.
At the end of the summit, a panel of judges selected winners of sustainability awards for organizations throughout the state of Georgia. After the conclusion of the conference, a “low country boil” feast was offered for all participants and guests.
Attendees from Earth Charter International (ECI) included Michael J. Bracken, Board Chairman, Dr. Chris Beehner, Partnership & Development Officer at ECI, Christiane Head and Corene Beehner. Skylar Ozanne and Joseph Ramsey from Medcom Benefit Solutions, an ECI Partner, were also in attendance.
Bracken stated that “the Coastal Earth Day Event in Darien, Georgia was an enormous success. The format of the fast-moving program added extra energy to the experience along with deep conversations. ECI had a great opportunity to share our values-based approach to sustainability in education with attendees at our booth and with our presentation. We consider it a privilege to have participated as a Sponsor”.
