On 31 March, 2022, the UNESCO San José Office, the UNESCO Guatemala Office and Earth Charter International (ECI) organized an online seminar to launch the study called: “Education for Sustainable Development: Theoretical and Experiences in Central America.”

This study, developed by the Earth Charter Center for ESD at the University for Peace, in collaboration with UNESCO San José and UNESCO Guatemala, has the general purpose of supporting the efforts that countries make to comply with the global framework “Education for Sustainable Development (ESD): towards the achievement of the objectives of sustainable development» (ESD for 2030). This publication systematizes promising practices of teachers and educational centers in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Panama, from which practices, challenges and lessons learned are extracted that provide tools and knowledge to teachers and policy makers to inspire and strengthen the development of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in classrooms and educational institutions.

This study is divided into three sections, the first offers a theoretical approach to the concept of education for sustainable development, its pedagogical approach, the areas of comprehensive institutional approach to sustainability and the connections with other education programs promoted by UNESCO. The second section presents the 18 cases of schools in the aforementioned countries, which are implementing innovative strategies associated with ESD, and ends the study with an analysis and reflection on these strategies, in light of ESD theory.
