Liaoning University Delegation Visits Costa Rica to Enhance Academic Collaboration on Sustainability

From July 29 to 31, 2024, we had the pleasure to host a delegation from Liaoning University (China) in their visit to Costa Rica. The delegation included Professor Yu Miaojie, a deputy to 14th National People’s Congress, Fellow of the International Economic Association, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Committee and President of Liaoning University, Associate Professor Yin Ruyu, Deputy Director of the Office of International Affairs, Associate Professor Chen Fu, Deputy Director of the Institute of Environmental Economics and Liu Renliang, Li Anmin Institute of Economic Research at LNU.

On July 29, the delegation visited the University of Costa Rica, where they were warmly welcomed by Gustavo Gutierrez Espeleta, Rector of this University, Leonardo Castello Rodriguez, Dean of the School of Economic Sciences and Diana Senior Angulo, Director of the Office of International Affairs and Outbound Cooperation.  They also met in the afternoon with members of the ACT4SDGs project, which is a project where University of Costa Rica, Earth Charter International and University for Peace are collaborating with 13 more universities in Latin America.

On July 30, Liaoning University delegation visited the National University of Costa Rica (UNA).  They were greeted by Francisco González Alvarado, Rector of UNA, Olman Segura, former Rector, Marco Otoya, Director of International Center for Economic Policy, Rosemery Hernandez, Director of International Affairs Office, Jorge Herrera Murillo, Vice President of Scientific Research, and the Deans and senior professors of relevant colleges. 

These two universities signed a cooperation agreement that will open doors for students and faculty exchanges, joint academic research and joint events such as webinars and conferences in the areas related to education, sustainability and economic development.

On July 31, the delegation visited the UN-mandated University for Peace and the Earth Charter Center for Education for Sustainable Development. A valuable exchange took place in a meeting with the University for Peace Academic Director and Head of International Law Department Dr. Mihir Kanade and Head of the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies, Dr. Adriana Salcedo.  The delegation had the opportunity to visit the Upeace park and its natural reserve and meet with Michael Bracken, Chair, Earth Charter International Board, Mirian Vilela, Executive Director, Alicia Jimenez, Director of Programmes and Erika Reinkendorf, Strategic Development and Program Manager.

In early 2023, Liaoning University and Earth Charter International, embarked in a special collaboration in the area of education for sustainable development and ecological civilization.  This visit served to strenghten this partnership.
