Earth Charter events at the IUCN Congress

The Earth Charter International has the pleasure to invite you to the events we are organizing in the framework of the 4th IUCN World Conservation Congress, to be held in Barcelona from 5 to 14 October, 2008:

1. Learning Opportunity: Ethics-Based Assessment: Helping individuals and organizations assess their commitment and action toward sustainability, and identify opportunities for strategic change

When? Thursday October 9, from 9:30 to 13:00, at AC Gracia

In this workshop we will present “EC-Assess”, an integrated assessment tool based on the ethical framework of the Earth Charter. Participants from the civil society, business and governmental sectors are encouraged to join us to learn how to use this tool, which provides step-by-step guidance for the assessment of an individual’s lifestyle, an organization’s policies and practices, or a government’s laws and strategies. It measures both the subject’s level of declared commitment and level of performance in their actions, and will allow participants to identify opportunities for strategic change and growth.

Please remember to sign up for our Learning Opportunity by 10 August at: https://gestion.gpdmc.com/LOForm/index.aspx?co=121

2. Intergenerational Workshop: Intergenerational Partnership with the IUCN: Fostering ethical leadership for a just, sustainable, and peaceful world

When? Tuesday October 7, from 9:30 to 11:00, at CCIB 127

Intergenerational partnership is essential for addressing complex global challenges – such as climate change, biodiversity loss, poverty, and gender inequity – and bringing about a just, sustainable, and peaceful world. After a short introduction of our Campaign for Intergenerational Partnership for Sustainability (IPS), including our IUCN draft Resolution and Buddy Experiment with the CEC, participants will be divided into 4 working groups: Member NGOs; Members States and Agencies; Secretariat; and Commissions. From these perspectives, groups will focus on:

1) What does intergenerational partnership mean to our part of the IUCN family?

2) How would we benefit from engaging in IPS?

3) What are some tangible mechanisms for engaging in IPS?

Finally, groups will reconvene and share ideas for possible steps forward.

3. Education Workshop: Triggering Behavioral Changes – Bringing Values and Principles of Sustainability into Education

When? Tuesday October 7, from 18:30 to 20:00, at CCIB 127

In this interactive workshop, we will present and discuss methodologies and experiences of teachers training that seek to incorporate values for sustainability into education systems. We will also be seeking partners among the IUCN Members in a global effort to implement these training processes.

4. “Keeping Nature Alive – the ethical foundations of nature conservation in the 21st Century”

When? Monday 6 October, 2008 from 14:30 to 16:00, at CCIB 128

You are also invited to attend the workshop entitled “Keeping Nature Alive – the ethical foundations of nature conservation in the 21st Century”. This workshop is organized by The Biosphere Ethics Project (of IUCN Commission on Environmental Law) and uses the Earth Charter as the starting point and universal framework for considering our specific responsibilities towards the biosphere and other species:

We really hope you can join us in some of these activities!
