Earth Charter Mexican network Launches National Commitment to ESD

The Earth Charter Network in Mexico decided to create a
National Commitment to the Global Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development. The Global Action Programme is the continuation of the United Nations Decade on Education for Sustainable Development and is coordinated by UNESCO.

The commitment was drafted by members of this network, as well as members of the Advisory Councils for Sustainable Development. The final draft of this Commitment was presented during the celebration of the fifteenth anniversary of the Earth Charter, held from April 21st to 23rd, 2015 in Coahuila, Mexico.

From that moment, a consultation process began with various key institutions, including the COMPLEXUS Network, which is a national network of Universities for Sustainability, which has given its views in order to support this Commitment. Most universities allied in this consortium have also done so. The support expressed by the Governors of Coahuila, Durango, Hidalgo, and all of its Higher Education Institutions of their respective states, have also participated in this Commitment.

With all of the inputs that have been received so far, the consultation phase of this Commitment is considered concluded and will now move to a second stage of alliances and action. The aim is to publicize the Global Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development and the National Commitment in Mexico to this Programme. Members of the Earth Charter Mexican Network will be revealing this document with organizations of various educational fields. Amongst the renowned allies with whom they are working on formal support is the SEMARNAT (Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources) and the SEP (Ministry of Education).
