IUCN Congress report highlights EC Assess workshop

In 7thJuly 2009, IUCN released the report “What can you learn from 5048 people hours of learning in skills-building workshops?“. This report presents an evaluation of all the Learning Opportunities organized during IUCN World Conservation Congress (43 in total). More than 8000 people from all over the world attended this Congress, which took place in Barcelona Spain, in October 2008.

The report features four learning opportunities with the highest score from participants evaluations; one of them is “EC Assess” workshop, a four-hour activity organized by ECI Secretariat. According to the report, the most influential factors on participants; satisfaction were:
–  The extent to which learning objectives were relevant to the IUCN Programme;
–  The extent to which training sessions contributed to individual learning.

In “EC-Assess” workshop, participants had the opportunity to learn about the Earth Charter and EC Assess; an integrated assessment tool based on the ethical framework of the Earth Charter. Twenty-five participants from fifteen countries attended and learned how to use this tool, which provides step-by-step guidance for the assessment of an individual’s lifestyle, an organization’s policies and practices, or a government’s laws and strategies. It measures both the subject’s level of declared commitment and level of performance in their actions, and allows users to identify opportunities for strategic change and growth. Participants highlighted EC Assess’ systematic approach and the richness of the discussion that was stimulated. They readily identified ways in which they could apply EC-Assess in their own countries, including in schools and universities, as well as local governments and youth networks.
