After two years, Nora Mahmoud has left Earth Charter International to pursue new challenges. She leaves an excellent legacy of work and dedication and is certain to continue to share her energy and the Earth Charter vision in her coming work. Earth Charter International is very grateful to have had Nora and sad to see her leave, but is also happy that she will be going on to do great work in the future.
Here is a personal introduction from the new International Youth Coordinator, Marcello Hernandez.
As a child I always got very excited every time that I heard the song “Heal the World” by Michael Jackson. I can’t explain why but I think it described with passion what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to create a better world although I didn’t know how I was going to do it.
After finishing a Master degree in Environmental Management, I realized after many years that I should revive my childhood dream and start to work on it with the new tools that I had learned. I became an environmental consultant and trainer for Costa Rican NGOs such as the marine conservation organization PROMAR Foundation, and CO2.cr, a network of young people working towards a low carbon and better adapted society. I also got involved with international NGOs like the Climate Reality Project and Al Gore certified me as a Climate Leader.
Today I’m taking a new path towards the same goal of creating a more sustainable society. I had the great honor and privilege to be selected as the new International Youth Coordinator at the Earth Charter International Secretariat. Now my job depends not only on me but also (and most of all) on our youth partners around the world who are leading incredible projects in their communities, schools, and homes in order to implement the Earth Charter principles and values.
I invite you to join me in this noble but important task. I know without any doubt that together we will create excellent initiatives and projects that will help our societies to see a brighter future. Let’s start the conversation on the role of youth in creating the world we want. Let’s start developing the solutions we need now.
