UNESCO 2023 Recommendation High-Level Regional Meeting for Latin America and the Caribbean

UNESCO and the Ministry of Education of Dominican Republic organized the High-Level Meeting on the 2023 Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights, and Sustainable Development: Latin America and the Caribbean as a Territory of Peace, bringing together education leaders from all over the region. Delegations from 20 countries participated, as well as other actors such as the UNESCO Chair in Education for Sustainable Development with the Earth Charter, led by Dr. Mirian Vilela, who was invited to this meeting due to the important role she has played in drafting this Recommendation and the Chair’s work in promoting ESD in connection with global citizenship, peace, and human rights.

The objective of the event was to design a common roadmap to advance the implementation of Recommendation 2023. To achieve this objective, spaces were created for each delegation and special participants to share what they are doing in their countries on issues related to Recommendation 2023. On behalf of the UNESCO Chair in ESD with the Earth Charter, Alicia Jiménez shared the work that this Chair is implementing in the context of higher education.

The outcome of this meeting is systematized in the document: Santo Domingo Roadmap. Towards Lasting Peace.

This instrument proposes regional and national actions, both short- and medium-term, to accelerate the implementation of the 2023 Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights, and Sustainable Development by 2026.

The 2023 Recommendation provides a very appropriate framework for educational processes that use the Earth Charter. And the Earth Charter, for its part, can be an instrument that supports the implementation of this Recommendation.
