A group of students at the Biological Sciences Area of the Methodist University in Sao Paulo – Planalto Campus – won first prize in the Santander Challenge of Sustainability 2010 awarded, on December 15th, 2010. The challenge is a cultural contest within the Santander Paths & Schools Platform which invites university students to propose sustainable ideas for their university. The BioMA Institute, an EC Affiliate, guided them in the development of their work.
“Bixo Verde” (Green Waste Bug), the winning project, was built completely based on the principles of the Earth Charter. The general objective was to promote sustainability “imprinting” in students from the very beginning of university life, independently from the carrier they choose. The idea is to connect them to the Methodist Sustainable Program on a systematic and permanent way to transform them into new leaders on sustainable processes.
