At the event, the Minister Marina Silva made a very strong speech of support to the Earth Charter, which is already widely used in the country and which has been disseminated by her Ministry in connection with Agenda 21 activities over the past five years. This agreement further strengthens and formalizes cooperation between the Brazilian government and Earth Charter International.

Attending the ceremonies on behalf of ECI were Council members Mateo Castillo, Razeena Wagiet, Brendan Mackey, Dumisani Nyoni, and Oscar Motomura, together with Earh Charter Commissioner Leonardo Boff (the founder of the Human Rights Defense Center and renowned international author of over sixty books) and Mirian Vilela.

The agreement marks a new phase in the growing relationship between the Brazilian Government and the Earth Charter.
