Mexican Government Commits to the Earth Charter

In connection with a special national ceremony for Earth Day (22 April 2007) — a ceremony that was hosted and keynoted by the President of the Republic, Felipe Calderón Hinojosa — Mexico‘s Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Education entered into a formal agreement to collaborate in the dissemination of the Earth Charter throughout Mexico‘s educational system. The agreement also marked a formal adoption of the UN Decade for Education for Sustainable Development (“DESD”), which ECI has partnered with UNESCO to promote. The agreement was personally signed by Mexico‘s Secretary of Environment, Juan Rafael Elvira Quesada, and Secretary of Education, Josefina Vazquez Mota.

Brazilian Ministry of Environment and ECI Sign Agreement

On Monday 30 April, Brazil’s Minister of Environment, Marina Silva (who is also a legendary environmental campaigner), signed an agreement of technical cooperation with Earth Charter International and the Human Rights Defense Center of Petropolis to disseminate, promote and use the Earth Charter widely.

Gorbachev, AtKisson Address Russian Conference on Sustainable Development

At a recent conference hosted by Russia’s “Public Chamber” — the official gathering point for the civil society movement of Russia, and a conduit for communicating civil society concerns to the government — former USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev made a well-received, unscheduled speech that underscored the importance of science to sustainable development, and pointed to the role of the Earth Charter as a guiding ethical framework

Report on Latin America Strategy for the UN DESD Released

Following up from the successful November 2006 meeting to accelerate the UN Decade for Education for Sustainable Development (DESD), ECI has continued to support UNESCO by facilitating the development of a regional implementation strategy for all of Latin America.
