This webinar welcomes two esteemed guest speakers:

Federico Mayor Zaragoza is a Spanish scientist, scholar, politician, diplomat, and poet. He served as Director-General of UNESCO from 1987 to 1999. He is currently the Chairman of the Foundation for a Culture of Peace and member of the Honorary Board of the International Decade for the Promotion of a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World, the Honorary Chairman of the Académie de la Paix, as well as President of the International Commission against the Death Penalty. Mayor was part of the drafting process of the Earth Charter as an Earth Charter Commissioner.

Professor Alexander Likhotal is the President of Green Cross International. He holds doctorates in Political Science and History. In 1991, he was appointed Deputy Spokesman and Advisor to the President of the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev. Having joined Green Cross International in 1996, he is actively involved in furthering sustainable development agenda. Likhotal has been very much involved in the Earth Charter Initiative since its beginning and is a member of the Earth Charter International Council.

Both of these speakers have long histories with the Earth Charter, sustainable development, and fostering a culture of peace.

Linking the webinar to the anniversary year slogan, the two guest speakers will elaborate their thoughts and feelings on the subject of “Earth Community”. This concept is taken from the Preamble of the Earth Charter and the larger paragraph may serve to broaden the discussion.

“To move forward we must recognize that in the midst of a magnificent diversity of cultures and life forms we are one human family and one Earth community with a common destiny. We must join together to bring forth a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace. Towards this end, it is imperative that we, the peoples of Earth, declare our responsibility to one another, to the greater community of life, and to future generations.”

Please, join us on the 25th of February to hear these great speakers and participate in a question and answer with them afterwards. We look forward to seeing you there!
