NEW PUBLICATION: Earth Charter Used As “Ethical Operating System” of Civilization-based Solutions

An article titled “Ancient Wisdom for Modern Challenges: Why Civilization-based Solutions Should Frame the Post-2025 Climate Agenda”, written by Binbin Wang, Peking University, with Mary Evelyn Tucker, and John Grim, Forum on Religion and Ecology at Yale University, was published in the March/April edition of Environment: Science and Policy for Sustainable Development. The authors discuss their case for the relevance of Civilization-based Solutions (CbS) in stabilizing the climate. The three pillars of the CbS framework require substantial changes in values, knowledge, and governance. The method for these widespread changes considers The Earth Charter as the “Ethical Operating System for CbS.”

The authors propose using The Charter, which they describe as “an existing intercultural ethical framework,” as a practical “ethical operating system” to guide changes in policy, behaviors, and building relationships. According to them, the four pillars of The Charter are hailed as the perfect foundation for the changes that are required for CbS by creating a” principle-based foundation that codifies the relational values central to diverse civilizations.”
