Education for Sustainable Development in Practice: Tips from Educators

Date and time:  Friday 6 November 5:00pm CET, 11:00am ET

Earth Charter International and the UNITWIN Network on ESD and Social Transformation, are organizing a series of webinars to bring together educators from different contexts to share good practices on education for sustainable development.

In this episode, we are inviting authors of two different publications related to one relevant competence of ESD: normative or integration of sustainability values into education for transformative processes. The authors will present some highlights of their writings and will engage in a dialogue between them and the audience.

The speakers are Natalya Hanley-Kun (UK) and Jacobus Bracker (Germany, on behalf of the other authors).

Natalya Hanley-Kun wrote the chapter called  “The role of empathy-based GCE pedagogy in Earth Charter”, in the book “Education for Sustainable Futures: Global Citizenship and the Earth Charter”,  edited by Douglas Bourn, Namrata Sharma, and Mirian Vilela published by Emerald Publishing (2025).

Jacobus Bracker with  Maike Land, Claudia Lemke and Sam Crowell wrote the chapter: “Transformative Education and the Earth Charter: Enabling Sustainable Development Through Transformative Learning in Higher Education”, in: The Sustainable Organization, Vol. 3,edited by Wollmann, Pemler and Ndrevataj, Springer (Future of Business and Finance series) (2026).

The objective of this webinar series is to open a space for sharing and learning about how education for sustainability can be put into practice and get inspiration from concrete actions, from primary and secondary to higher education, in formal or non formal settings and from different cultural contexts.

This webinar is organized as part of our UNESCO Chair on Education for Sustainable Development with the Earth Charter, which develops education programmes and research in the field of education, sustainability, as well as values and ethics.
