She will track the discussion and add her comments and expert opinions on the thread, which will be active for two weeks starting on the 8th.
This discussion will follow the free World Live Streaming Event: Ecocide Law Day of Local and Global Action hosted by the Eradicating Ecocide Initiative on September 6th. You can follow the events live online and find out more about it on the web page.
The connection between the Eradicating Ecocide movement and the Earth Charter is very strong. Building on the foundations of the Earth Charter, Polly Higgins, after speaking with Steven Rockefeller at Earth Charter’s Network Meeting in Amsterdam, December 2008, took forward the ethos of the Earth Charter through her earlier proposal for a Universal Declaration of Earth Rights, which Bolivia then took into the United Nations in 2010. At the same time in 2010, Polly proposed an international crime to create a legal duty of care: Ecocide law. The Earth Charter, Earth Rights and Ecocide law are now part of a fast-growing movement for a whole new body of Earth law where the health and well-being of people and planet are put first. Ecocide law is a hard-law mechanism by which Earth Charter Principles shall be upheld.
