Mexico EC+10 event!

SEMARNAT (Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources) and the University of Guanajuato organized, between April 23-24, the inauguration of the worldwide EC+10 celebrations.   The event counted with the presence and participation of a number of Earth Charter leaders and Mexican academic and social leaders, such as Steven Rockefeller, Chair of the Earth Charter International Council, (please find Mr. Rockefeller’s speech here) as well as Rick Clugston from the USA, Peter Corcoran of the Florida Gulf Coast University, and Brendan Mackey from Australia, also members of the Council, among others.  During this occasion Mr. Rockefeller gave a conference on Earth Charter and Human Rights; then Mr.  Mackey presented a keynote speech on Ethics and Climate Change.  Several youth groups shared their experiences with the Earth Charter as well as leaders of other parts of Latin America and Spain.  Here you can find the program in English.

On 22 April the Mayor of the City of Guanajuato, Governor of the State of Guanajuato and the Rector of the University of Guanajuato hosted a celebration of Earth Day together with a celebration of the 10th anniversary of the launch of the Earth Charter at the City Hall in Guanajuato.

On April 21, the President of Mexico, Felipe Calderon, celebrated Mother Earth’s International Day in Veracruz and referred to the Earth Charter is his speech several times, as follows:

“The International Day of Mother Earth was established by the United Nations to remind all of us around the world, our duty to care and respect our natural wealth.”

“We are also celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Earth Charter Initiative, which is a document and a call for action, which is more relevant today than ever.  That is what I think.”

Within the same space, Mr. Martínez Soliman, UN Resident Coordinator for Mexico, mentioned the Earth Charter in his speech in the following way:

“As Resident Coordinator for the United Nations in Mexico, it is my privilege to attend the celebration of the International Mother Earth Day, this year in particular, in the setting of the Earth Charter’s tenth anniversary.”

“We feel proud that the Government of Mexico has included the Charter’s initiative in its sustainable development agenda. This document, which is the result of one of the most extensive participating processes of the drawing up of an international declaration, embraces a true endeavor to create an accord among peoples aimed at promoting a new sense of well-being, development, and justice in the framework of urgent challenges caused by climate change and the growing strain on ecosystems and natural resources on which every human being depends.”
