Network of University Radio Stations promoting the Earth Charter

The Association of University Radio Stations of Spain, the University Radio Network of Latin America and the Caribbean (RRULAC) and the University of Extremadura organized the IV Meeting RRULAC IB: “University Radio in Progress: Towards the Conformation of a Media Agenda” with the participation of university radio representatives from more than a dozen countries of the Americas, the Caribbean and Europe (Costa Rica, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, the United States, Portugal, Italy and Spain). The Meeting took place from 24 to 27 October 2018, in Madrid and Cáceres.

Mr. Federico Mayor Zaragoza offered the inaugural speech of the Meeting, where he spoke about “The era of knowledge“. Throughout his speech, he mentioned the importance of university radio stations in the current context, from the point of view of proposing themes and denouncing the situation that we live in our days. In this regard, he stressed the importance of the “Earth Charter” as a working document for university stations.

During the Meeting, the RIU (International University Radio Stations, Network of Networks) endorsed the Earth Charter and invited all its networks and broadcasters to subscribe and use it individually. Institutionally, RIU is committed to working on the dissemination of the Earth Charter among its radio stations and associated networks, as well as among the citizens through specific actions of radio and transmedia communication, using the 16 principles of the Charter.

As a follow up, RIU is planning to sign an Agreement with the University Institute for Human Rights, Democracy and Culture of Peace and Non-Violence (DEMOSPAZ), of the Autonomous University of Madrid and the Ramón Areces Foundation. The Agreement will seek to generate an action plan, which among other actions, will aim at developing radion programmes on this and the dissemination of the Earth Charter among the 300 media and university platforms that are part of this international network of radios.
