New Earth Leaders: Leadership development program towards sustainability

The New Earth Leaders program is a leadership and organizational development program in which young professionals working in the private sector use the Earth Charter as an ethical framework for solving sustainable business cases and to grow as sustainability leaders. This program will start in April 2010 in Brazil and Holland and it consists of three parts during a 6 months period.

New Earth Leaders
The New Earth Leaders Program is a program that links personal and organizational development. It is aimed at facilitating the development of sustainable leaders for the future, based on Earth Charter values. The New Earth Leaders program is an action learning program undertaken together with teachers and facilitators of world-class renown and integrity. Young (business) leaders will join with peers on a learning journey that will take them from behind their desks and into the real world. They will work on a Business case that has significant socio- economic challenges, and co-created with their own organization.

Participant & organization profile:
The New Earth Leaders Program is for young leaders with several years of work experience in a business environment who know that leadership begins wherever you are in the organization, who understand the need to ‘be the change’ and who want to learn how to do this in practical business reality. It is for the organizations to which these young leaders belong; organizations that are searching for ways of doing business; ways of creating wealth that are inclusive, considerate and respectful of both climate and people. It is for organizations aware of the need to equip their young leaders with skills that meet the challenges we face.

Program
In each program the group will work in teams with the four main themes of the Earth Charter and look at business cases;
Team I. Respect and care for the community of life.
Team II. Ecological integrity.
Team III. Social and economic justice.
Team IV. Democracy, non-violence and peace.

Examples of themes and business cases

  • Public-private partnerships: during a program of a week participants work on identifying market opportunities for companies considering environmental impact collaboration with NGO’s and government.
  • Sustaining the supply chain: during a program of a week a group stake-holders of the meat supply chain make a joint effort to see how they can minimize the environmental impact and maximize social benefits for farmers in Brazil.
  • Sustainable cities: during a program of a week a network of organizations in urban planning, regional development, constructing and consultantancy work on creating a regional development plan to create a model town for sustainability, based on the idea of transition towns and including all social aspects, involving local companies and entrepreneurs.

The program will encourage participants to bring in sustainable business cases from their own organization and provides guidance for the possible implementation of solutions.
