The Earth Charter International Secretariat and Center for ESD was invited to participate at the Sustainability, Educating for Action Conference in Canada. This conference for educators was organized by Manitoba’s Ministries of Education, and Children and Youth Opportunities, along with the Manitoba Association of School Superintendents.
The conference took place in Winnipeg, Canada, from November 15th-16th, 2012. It brought together around 700 participants and several renowned speakers, including Annie Leonard from The Story of Stuff, Thomas Homer-Dixon, a leading expert in sustainability, Sheila Watt-Cloutier, Nobel Peace Prize nominee, and many others.
The ECI Secretariat and Center for ESD organized the session called “Integrating Earth Charter Sustainability Values in Education”. It was a one and a half hour session, led by Alicia Jimenez, during which participants reflected on the pedagogical aspects for transformative education for sustainability and the role of the Earth Charter in that pedagogy. Participants had the opportunity to visit all the principles of the Earth Charter, reflecting on them with inspiring background music, and choosing one principle that they thought they could start to put in practice in their work and/or personal life.

ECI expects to continue the collaboration with the organizers, and carry out meetings or online courses and other activities to promote education for sustainable development.
