The Executive Director of the Earth Charter International, Mirian Vilela, participated in the Santa Lucia International Festival of Monterrey, Mexico, with a presentation on the Earth Charter. The festival takes place every year under the theme “A Wave of Love for the Planet.”
The talk held on Monday, 29 October, aimed to raise public awareness of the shared responsibility we all have to care for our planet and the community of life with understanding, compassion and love, as articulated in the Earth Charter. The presentation was followed by a performance of Ecuadorian folk dancing.
This eleventh edition of the festival, held from 25 October to 11 November, featured a series of artistic performances of folk dance and music from Mexico and several other countries, as well as dialogues on topics related to the theme of the festival.
According to Lorenia Canavati von Borstel, president of the festival, the aim of the festival is to bring art to the streets and it is very aligned with the Earth Charter. She affirms that this effort seeks to “promote, through artistic expressions and dialogues of experts, the care of the planet in which we live and that we will pass down to our children.”
Ms. Vilela took advantage of the opportunity to meet with the Rector of the Universidad Regiomontana of Monterrey, an institution that adopted the Earth Charter more than 10 years ago, and since then provides Earth Charter workshops to secondary schools in Monterrey. The university organized a forum for Ms. Vilela to interact with high school students so that they learn about the Earth Charter with an invitation to get involved in this global initiative.
In addition, this visit served to strengthen ties with the Foundation Mundo Sustentable that has also worked with the promotion of the Earth Charter for several years, and with Lorena Herrera, focal point of the Earth Charter in Nuevo Leon.
