The Earth Charter workshop at Peace & Art event organized by the Peace Corps

On 30th of April in San Jose, Costa Rica, at the Cultural Center of PANI (Patronato Nacional de la Infancia) there was an event called Arte por la Paz (Art for Peace), organized by Peace Corps volunteers.

The Peace Corps traces its roots and mission to 1960, when then Senator John F. Kennedy challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country in the cause of peace by living and working in developing countries. From that inspiration grew an agency of the federal government devoted to world peace and friendship. Since that time, nearly 200,000 Peace Corps Volunteers have served in 139 host countries to work on issues ranging from AIDS education to information technology and environmental preservation.

Arte por la Paz event consisted in different kinds of art performances and it was designed for about 50 school children from rural communities from outskirts of San Jose. The Earth Charter was invited to present itself at the event.

The EC workshop taught the children and their parents some key facts about the principles of the EC and also showed them, how everyone can participate in promoting the sustainable development. The children took part to interactivity games in order to be able to learn for instance about the current world challenges and how at the end of the day they all relate to one another.

The Earth Charter would like to thank warmly the Peace Corps volunteers and the children and their parents for the enjoyable event!
