The policy relevance of the Earth Charter for Europe

On occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome and the 15th anniversary of the Treaty of Maastricht in May 2007, Maastricht University took the opportunity to stage its 3rd Forum Maastricht conference on European topics in cooperation with Socires, a Dutch policy think-tank. Ms. Johannah Bernstein, an international environmental lawyer in Geneva who worked with Prof. Steven Rockefeller in several phases of the Earth Charter drafting process, developed the invited paper The Policy Relevance of the Earth Charter for Europe for inclusion in the proceedings of the Maatricht Forum. The paper describes the policy relevance of the Earth Charter for Europe’s member states and for the Commission process itself. We invite you to read and continue the discussion on Earth Charter’s relevance as well as possible impact on the policy of Europe’s future development.
