The Earth Charter Center for Education for Sustainable Development is organizing a webinar called Values-based Education for Sustainability, to open a space for discussion and reflection on the values aspects of education for sustainable development. This is part of the UNESCO Chair on Education for Sustainable Development efforts.

Speakers:
- Sam Crowell: Professor emeritus of education at California State University–San Bernardino (United States) and a founder and co-director of the MA in Holistic and Integrative Education and the Center for Holistic and Integrative Learning. He has worked as an elementary school teacher, a principal, an administrator, and a university professor. He considers himself a holistic educator and an advocate of the artistry of teaching. He co-authored the book, “The Re-Enchantment of Learning: A Manual for Teacher Renewal and Classroom Transformation” published by Corwin Press, and recently released a new book, “Emergent Teaching: A Path of Creativity, Significance, and Transformation”. He is the facilitator of the upcoming course offered by the Earth Charter Center for ESD: Education and Values for Sustainable Development with the Earth Charter.
- Stephen Sterling: Professor of Sustainability Education, Centre for Sustainable Futures (CSF) at Plymouth University (UK), and an advisor to the UK Higher Education Academy on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). He has been widely recognized for many years as one of the leading voices in sustainability education, and is in demand as an international keynote speaker. His first book (co-edited with John Huckle) was Education for Sustainability (Earthscan, 1996), and this was followed by the influential Schumacher Briefing Sustainable Education – Re-visioning learning and change (Green Books 2001), which remains a best seller. He also co-founded the first Master’s course in the UK on sustainability education (at London South Bank University), and led the WWF project on systems thinking “Linking Thinking – new perspectives on thinking and learning for sustainability”.
- Bernard Combes: Information Officer of the Education for Sustainable Development section at UNESCO Headquarters (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). He is part of the team that manages the coordination role that the UN has given to UNESCO for the United Nations Decade for Education for Sustainable Development DESD (2005-2014). He is in charge of information, publications, communication, the DESD website and internet activities, public relations and learning materials development, and among other things, reinforcing cooperation with other agencies and stakeholders, in regards to cooperation in Communication, Education and Public Awareness activities in the areas of biodiversity, sustainable lifestyles, youth and gender issues.
During this 1.5-hour webinar, the panelists will discuss various questions presented by the host, and the floor will be opened for participants to ask more questions and interact with the panelists in the second half of the webinar.
As the Earth Charter Preamble says, “We stand at a critical moment of Earth’s history, a time when humanity must choose its future”. Education institutions and educators have an important role to help individuals and communities to move societies towards a better, more sustainable future. But we need to better understand what is the role of education in this transformation, what are the kinds of learning, skills, attitudes and values needed to shape a more sustainable future, and what is our personal role in this transformation.
