Mexican Government Commits to the Earth Charter

In connection with a special national ceremony for Earth Day (22 April 2007) — a ceremony that was hosted and keynoted by the President of the Republic, Felipe Calderón Hinojosa — Mexico‘s Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Education entered into a formal agreement to collaborate in the dissemination of the Earth Charter throughout Mexico‘s educational system. The agreement also marked a formal adoption of the UN Decade for Education for Sustainable Development (“DESD”), which ECI has partnered with UNESCO to promote. The agreement was personally signed by Mexico‘s Secretary of Environment, Juan Rafael Elvira Quesada, and Secretary of Education, Josefina Vazquez Mota.

Brazilian Ministry of Environment and ECI Sign Agreement

On Monday 30 April, Brazil’s Minister of Environment, Marina Silva (who is also a legendary environmental campaigner), signed an agreement of technical cooperation with Earth Charter International and the Human Rights Defense Center of Petropolis to disseminate, promote and use the Earth Charter widely.

City of Sao Paulo Commits to the Earth Charter

On Wednesday morning, 2 May, the Sao Paulo City Hall was the site of a major Earth Charter event. The mayor of Sao Paulo, Mr. Gilberto Kassab, signed a commitment to the Earth Charter and expressed his full support for the collaboration efforts between the Sao Paolo Secretary of Education and Secretary of Environment, focused on implementing actions to bring the Earth Charter into the city’s education system.
