Learning a Language of Care

By Wendy Coulson, USA.

Wendy Coulson, an English language teacher educator based in Mexico, found a new direction for her work through the Online Certificate in Education for Sustainable Development with the Earth Charter Center. After more than 30 years in teaching English as a second language, studying ecological thinking changed how she understood her role as a facilitator and course creator. It connected her professional practice with a wider responsibility for the living world.

As an independent consultant, Wendy shares ways to bring this perspective into language education. As an example, at a MEXTESOL convention in Monterrey, Mexico, she presented on Education for Sustainable Development. In her writing, she proposes activities such as taking students outdoors to describe elements of nature, exploring local places through stories, and using questions to examine consumption choices. These activities give language learning a meaningful connection with everyday life.

Wendy also qualified as an Earth Charter School Seal Verifier. Drawing on the Earth Charter, she encourages educators to cultivate ecological awareness alongside communication and critical thinking. Her learning journey continues to shape how she creates opportunities for teachers and students to see themselves as part of nature and act with care.
