Dominican Ministry of Education Celebrates World Environment Day with Earth Charter Workshop

To celebrate World Environment Day, the Dominican Republic‘s State Ministry of Education organized a national workshop on the Earth Charter for school teachers. The Vice Minister of Education and the General Curriculum Director attended and participated in the workshop.

Tatarstan Surges Forward to Implement the Principles of the Charter

A remarkable meeting took place recently in Kazan, Tatarstan, where the President, Prime Minister, and many top officials and ministers reaffirmed their commitment to the Earth Charter. (Tatarstan is a semi-autonomous, multi-ethnic Republic within the Russian Federation. Its Parliament formally endorsed the Charter in 2001.

Earth Charter Education Center Holds Workshops for Kids in Costa Rica

From 15 to 29 May, 2007, the Earth Charter Center of Education for Sustainable Development in Costa Rica offered six workshops for children from ages of 8 to 12 years. In total, 202 kids participated in a one-hour workshop designed to sensitize participants to the integrated vision of the Earth Charter, and raise a sense of commitment and responsibility towards sustainability.

Rabbi Soetendorp Highlights Earth Charter at German Church Congress

At the biennial German Protestant Kirchentag (“Church Congress”), held last week in Cologne, Earth Charter Commissioner Rabbi Awraham Soetendorp introduced thousands of people to the Earth Charter’s vision of a sustainable future.

ECI Introduces New Ethical Assessment Tool at CIVICUS World Assembly

ECI staff journeyed to the CIVICUS World Assembly, held May 23-27 in Glasgow, to launch EC-Assess – a brand new integrated assessment tool based on the ethical framework of the Earth Charter.

Alan AtKisson Speaks (and Sings) in Final Plenary of CIVICUS World Assembly

CIVICUS made an unequivocal statement about its commitment to sustainability by focusing the final plenary of this year’s World Assembly on: “Our Accountability to Future Generations: Responding to the Challenge of Environmental Sustainability.” Jem Bendell, a professor from Auckland University, moderated the plenary, which included June Zeitlin of the Women’s Environment and Development Organization, Alan AtKisson of Earth Charter International, and a video broadcast of Wangari Maathai, Nobel Peace Prize winner and Earth Charter Commissioner.

Youth Participation at CIVICUS (and late night sessions at the Youth Hostel)

The first ever CIVICUS Youth Assembly brought together 150 dynamic, energetic, and committed youth delegates from 38 countries. As the co-presenter of a workshop, I am grateful to have been invited to participate. The Youth Assembly took place in Glasgow, Scotland from the 22-23 of May and fed seamlessly into the larger 5-day World Assembly in which young delegates made up approximately 15% of the 1,000 participants.

This year at CIVICUS, IPS (Inter Press Service) and Oxfam-Novib organized a one-day, invitation-only dialogue for a group of global media and civil society representatives.
