On Monday 30 April, Brazil’s Minister of Environment, Marina Silva (who is also a legendary environmental campaigner), signed an agreement of technical cooperation with Earth Charter International and the Human Rights Defense Center of Petropolis to disseminate, promote and use the Earth Charter widely.

On the occasion of Earth Day, the Delhi Government expressed its commitment to the Earth Charter vision and launched a collaborative project with CLEAN-India (Community Led Environment Action Network), a program created by Development Alternatives (a leading Indian NGO and ECI Affiliate) to bring the Earth Charter to over 2,000 Delhi Schools. As part of this effort the Earth Charter, will be integrated into the school curriculum.

After six months of research — involving interviews with leading thinkers and actors in the field of religion and sustainability, as well as literature surveys and visits to key institutions — ECI has taken the first visible steps toward launching its new Program on Religion and Sustainability (described in an earlier posting as well).

For the past six months, ECI has conducted a process of consultation and research to strengthen its active engagement with religious communities and faith-based organizations. The consultation resulted in the development of a specific Earth Charter Program on Religion and Sustainability, for which ECI is currently seeking funds and support. The program will center around the production of high-quality educational materials to increase the level of awareness, knowledge of best practices, and commitment to action among the religions on key international issues like climate change, biodiversity loss and sustainable living.
